About KBPE

Kerala Board of Public Examinations i.e. the KBPE is an independent department for education. It is responsible for conducting the Public Examinations like HSC, SSLC, ALEVEL, KTET, TTC, THSLC, and KGTE. KBPE functions directly under the Ministry of Secondary Education, Government of Kerala and aims to promote world-class education in Kerala.

History of KBPE

The KBPE was established in the year of 1965, mainly with the purpose of propagating education to all sections of the people. The motto that it runs by is “Reach the Unreached,” within Kerala via a private or regular mode of education. It also aims to concentrate on reaching out to the often sidelined socio-economic and religious section.

The KBPE imparts formal school level education to students in Class 1 to Class 12. It also conducts public exams for Classes 10 and 12.

SCERT is the State Council of Educational Research and Training. There are two main boards which are responsible for primary, secondary, and higher secondary education in Kerala. The Directorate of Higher Secondary Education (DHSE) and Kerala State Education Board (KSEB), which conducts the SSLC Class 10 exams. The DHSE conducts the Plus 2 exam for Classes 11 and 12 every year.

SCERT or The State Council of Educational Research and Training, Kerala is an education board of Kerala which prepares the curriculum for the schools affiliated to it. It is an autonomous body and is responsible for planning, implementation, and evaluation of all the academic programs from pre-school to higher secondary levels. Due to proper education, Kerala is now among the most literate states in India, and is the first state to achieve 100% primary education.

The Kerala Board conducts the SSLC and Plus 2 board exams every year in the months of March and April. This year, the SSLC (Class 10) exams are scheduled to start on 31st March 2022 and end on 12th April 2022. The Kerala Board, which is known as KBPE conducts the exams and announces the results for Class 10 and Class 12. The Directorate of Higher Secondary Education or the DHSE was established in 1990 and came into full effect by 2000-2001. The Government of Kerala established the DHSE to promote all round development in Higher Secondary Education by segregating pre-degree courses from University education. The DHSE implements effective administrative systems, motivated and highly qualified staff, institutional network and appropriate philosophies to make Higher Secondary education more effective.

DHSE conducts the plus one and plus two exams and declares the results separately. This year,  4,22,890 students appeared for the Kerala Board Plus 2 (Class 12) public examination and 83.87% of the students passed the exams. VHSE

VHSE Kerala is short of Vocational Higher Secondary Education in Kerala which refers to the different vocational courses that can be taken in the state. Vocational education aims to prepare students to develop skills which will enhance their employability. The VHSE Kerala board conducts the VHSE exam and is also responsible for declaring the results.

At present, there are 35 restructured Vocational Courses in around 389 schools all across the state of Kerala. It should be noted that the age limit for any Vocational Courses is 15 to 20 years for the students to pass SSLC Kerala Class 10 exam, CBSE Class 10, ICSE Class 10 or any other equivalent exam.

Grading System

Grades are awarded to the students by the KBPE based on their marks in SSLC Class 10 exam. The grades represent the performance of the students in the exam. The Grading System of Kerala Board is simple and is given in the table below.

Note: If a candidate fails to achieve 30 or D+, which is the minimum passing mark, his/her results are put on hold by the KSEB board. The candidates are then declared to have failed.
